Non-Surgical Facial Treatments For Transgenders

May 18, 2020

Are you a transgender looking to transition? Dermal Fillers is an option for you. For those who don’t want to undergo surgery because it may be too costly. There is also the option of using dermal fillers. We mention some facial treatments for transgenders to get the job done the same way. As they can do the same job as surgery by changing the features of the face anyhow you like. As such many people come to med spa in order to achieve facial feminization and masculinization through dermal fillers.

FACIAL FEMINIZATION

It is easier than ever to make your outer appearance a better reflection of your inner self. Facial feminization procedures have been gaining popularity among men hoping to look more approachable or transition to female. As well as among women hoping to have a more feminine appearance. Fortunately, altering facial features to create a softer, feminine look does not have to require facial feminization surgery. Below are the most common non-surgical procedures to achieve facial feminization without plastic surgery.

JAW MUSCLE REDUCTION WITH BOTOX OR DYSPORT FOR TRANSGENDER

Many people jump to jaw reduction plastic surgery to re-contour and re-shape the mandible bone. There is a less invasive and non-permanent options as well. Botox of the masseter muscle is an injectable that can also narrow the jawline. Botox works on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. The masseter muscle runs down the cheekbone down to the lower jaw on both sides of the face. The masseter may be enlarged in some people. If there is frequent grinding of teeth resulting in increased muscle bulk, facial asymmetries, and an overly-square and masculine jawline. Injections of Botox or Dysport inject directly into the muscle work by essentially relaxing and ‘atrophying’ the muscle. Thereby reducing its size. While Botox will take a few sessions to achieve your desired look. It requires continued injections, compared to jaw reduction surgery it is significantly less risky.

CHEEK AUGMENTATION FOR TRANSGENDER

Women have fuller, more forward projected cheeks compared to men. Dermal fillers like Voluma to restore volume that is lost from aging or Radiesse to fill up the cheeks are also a good option. Dermal fillers work with the cheek’s native tissue to give a natural appearance. While dermal filler requires more maintenance than cheek implants, there is a lower risk of infection, migration, and asymmetry. When used in cheek augmentation for transgender patients, dermal fillers are injected into the deep tissue through a thin needle. A topical anesthetic may be applied beforehand to numb the area, though discomfort and swelling are usually minimal. Results are immediate and may continue to improve.

Compared to the use of cheek implants, fillers are much easier to contour, lift and customize; this is especially important to transgender patients who are having their cheeks done for the first time. Using fillers as opposed to implants makes future alterations to your face easier to work around. Depending on the type of filler used, patients must visit their aesthetic injection specialists for a touch-up between every six months to two years.

While this fact may seem like an inconvenience, it allows better long-term results. Your facial structure changes over time, so younger patients especially benefit from fillers because implants can look awkward as you age. Removing implants will also require another surgery, whereas adjusting fillers is something you can do on a regular basis to ensure ongoing optimal outcomes. Given all of the benefits, it’s easy to see why dermal fillers are making cheek implants largely a thing of the past for transgender patients.

CHIN AUGMENTATION FOR TRANSGENDER

Men generally have square jawlines and their chins are usually not as pointed as women’s and do not create a triangle with the two cheekbones. The options for chin augmentation are very similar to those for the jaw and cheeks. There is reconstructive plastic surgery available to resculpt the chin bone as well as Botox and dermal filler to provide a non-surgical and non-permanent option. Botox works with the mentalis muscle to turn the chin down and dermal filler adds fullness to make a more pointed chin.

RESHAPING THE NOSE FOR TRANSGENDER

Believe it or not, a rhinoplasty (a.k.a. nose job) is not the only way to restructure the nose. Small amounts of dermal filler, including long-lasting Bellafill, can help feminize the nose too. While dermal filler isn’t able to reconstruct the nose, it can enhance feminization by lifting the tip of the nose and reducing the appearance of dorsal humps.

LIP AUGMENTATION FOR TRANSGENDER

Lip fillers like Juvéderm Volbella to fill in the lips, or Restylane Silk to add volume and plump up the lips, are another non-invasive way to instantly feminize the face. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for a dermatologist to inject the dermal filler, the results are immediate, and it can last around four to six months. Due to recent celebrity trends, lip augmentation has been overwhelmingly popular, especially for women. Different types of filler will give different results from volume to smooth vertical lines around the mouth.

At Setiba Aesthetics group, we offer the most advanced, FDA approved cosmetic fillers available, including Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse.  Additionally, fillers can be used to create fullness in the lips and cheeks for a more feminine or masculine  appearance.

FACIAL HAIR REMOVAL FOR TRANSGENDER

Removing facial hair is a good first step for those transitioning, particularly for transgender women who are not undergoing hormone therapy. When transitioning to female, hormone therapy includes lowering testosterone levels and increasing estrogen into a typical female range. Lowered testosterone is responsible for the thickening of facial hair and, if lowered, can result in lessened hair growth. However, trans women not undergoing hormone therapy can eliminate facial hair through laser hair removal. Our Laser hair Removal Treatment removes any unnecessary Body or Facial hair. The procedure is non-invasive and produces stronger results than waxing or shaving.

EYEBROW SHAPING FOR TRANSGENDER

Women tend to have higher set eyebrows that sit above the brow ridge, the brow bone located above the eye sockets, as well as a more arched shape. While there are surgical facial feminization surgeries, such as an endoscopic brow lift, Botox is a good non-surgical option to create a more feminine arch.

FACIAL MASCULINIZATION

Facial masculinization allows men to attain a more angular or rugged facial appearance. Due to hormones, women and men tend to have different facial shapes and characteristics. Masculinization procedures allow men to minimize feminine facial contours and create more masculine ones. Procedures can include forehead lengthening, cheek augmentation, rhinoplasty, jaw contouring and chin recontouring.

RESHAPING THE NOSE FOR TRANSGENDER

The primary tool used to perform nonsurgical rhinoplasty is a collection of dermal fillers that are designed to smooth, volumize and create symmetry. This treatment offers correction for a broad range of complaints, without the need for anesthesia, incisions or an extended recovery process. The procedure typically takes under one hour to complete, with some patients only needing a few minutes in our office to achieve stellar improvements. While the new look is only temporary, many fillers last up to one year or even longer today.

Male noses are usually larger and slightly more prominent than female noses. The nasal bases are typically wider in male noses, and the nasal bridge is usually straight or slightly arched. It is a good choice for those who are unhappy with the size, shape or contours of the nose but do not want to undergo a surgical procedure to make the necessary corrections. You can change your nose to suit your ideal image by using dermal fillers to:

  • Straighten a nasal bridge
  • Diminish the appearance of a bump or concave
  • Create symmetry between the two side of the nose
  • Widen a narrow bridge
  • Add shape to a pointed nasal tip
  • Reduce the appearance of a turned-up nose
  • Correct imperfections left behind by injury

HAIR TRANSPLANTATION FOR TRANSGENDER

As a FTM or MTF trans-patient you may consider a transgender hair transplant to achieve your aesthetic goals. With an increasing number of people identifying themselves as transgender, part of undergoing a transition may require treatment for reshaping & adjusting your hair line.If you are undergoing FTM transition, your male hormones change your appearance- including your hair. Your scalp may start to undergo a degree of male pattern baldness.

As part of the transition from FTM, beard and eyebrow hair will grow and also change. The PRP Hair Restoration Treatment will enhance the growth of your hair. A hair transplant can also help to create desirable beard hair and eyebrows following a completed transition. As such our non-surgical PRP hair treatment can help give you your desired outcome. PRP therapy involves taking a blood sample and using a machine to separate the platelets from the blood. The platelets are then injected into the scalp where hair thinning and balding is occurring. Using this method you can get your desired facial hair.

RE-DEFINING THE JAW FOR TRANSGENDER

There are key differences between the size and shape of the female and male jaw making the jaw profiles of men and women a significant indicator of gender identity and contributor to facial gender confirmation. Characterizing the male face in part by a strong, prominent, well-defined jawline, whereas a softer, less defined jaw is perceived as being more feminine. Men typically have wider, heavier-set jawlines with a sharper angle between the chin and jaw, as well as a flatter base, giving a male jawline a “square” look.

Enhancing the jaw line with dermal filler injections can give you a more youthful appearance by filling in loose skin. By smoothing the contours of the jaw, it increases the definition of this area. Jaw enhancement can also decrease the appearance of jowls, or hanging folds of fat and skin drooping beneath the jawline. During the treatment small volumes of dermal filler gel are injected at several places along the jawline. This process changes the contours of the area by filling in the skin from the inside out. The result is a jawline that looks more prominent and well defined. Injections of dermal filler can help to plump loose skin hanging from the jaw line, making the area look younger and rejuvenated.

FROWN LINES AND WRINKLES REMOVAL WITH BOTOX OR DYSPORT FOR TRANSGENDER

Botox and Dysport injections are one of the most popular treatments for reducing lines and wrinkles. They work to feminize the face by smoothening the skin and reducing signs of aging such as crow’s feet and frown lines. This treatment is also ideal if you have deep ‘furrow’ lines between your brows causing an overly ‘serious’ expression or heavy appearance to the brow.

DERMAL FACIAL FILLERS WITH RESTYLANE FOR TRANSGENDER

Dermal fillers are a safer and less invasive alternative to implants. Brands like Juvederm, Restylane Lyft, Sculptra and Voluma make FDA-approved filler solutions that are safe and effective. Side effects are rare, and patients are often in and out of their appointment in about an hour.

Depending on your facial features and underlying structure there may be certain areas of the face that appear sunken or hollow, such as the under-eye area, cheeks, around the mouth, and lips. Dermal fillers such as Restylane are an ideal way to fill out these hollow areas, correct any volume loss due to aging and feminize facial contours. Dermal fillers are ideal for:

  • Lip filling and plumping
  • Alleviating crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles
  • Adding volume to cheeks, chin contours, forehead, and nose
  • Filling facial hollows especially sunken areas under the eyes
  • Reducing the appearance of “sad mouth”

PERIORAL FEMINIZATION & REJUVENATION FOR TRANSGENDER

The ‘perioral’ area of your face is the area immediately surrounding the mouth, including several features: lips, upper lip area, nasolabial folds, and the corners of the mouth. There are several non-surgical treatments that will help to feminize and rejuvenate this lower part of the face:

  • Dermal fillers such as Restylane add volume and fullness to the lips as an injectable, non-surgical treatment consisting of hyaluronic acid — a safe, natural, and long-lasting substance that boosts lip volume, improves structure–and most critically for feminization–improves the overall lip shape.
  • When injected with the correct skill and artistry to areas around the mouth, Botox and Dysport injections can result in a very feminine and natural-looking result.

TCA CHEMICAL FACIAL PEELS FOR TRANSGENDER

TCA chemical facial peels are an ideal solution to smoothen and rejuvenate the texture of facial skin. The active component in TCA is trichloroacetic acid – a safe, non-toxic substance that is similar to vinegar. When TCA is applied to the skin’s epidermis, the top layers of cells dry and peel over a period of a week resulting in smoother, more feminine, and younger-looking skin.

MICRONEEDLING FOR SMOOTHING IMPERFECTIONS AND SKIN TEXTURE FOR TRANSGENDER

Microneedling involves the use of a series of tiny and very short needles to penetrate the skin. The procedure sounds painful but the needle is tiny creating a very mild sensation and only very superficial punctures of the skin’s epidermis. Microneedling is ideal for smoothing skin texture and for reducing the appearance of skin imperfections such as acne scarring, uneven pigmentation, and enlarged pores.

KYBELLA “DOUBLE CHIN” REDUCTION FOR TRANSGENDER

It is an ideal treatment for those seeking a non-surgical and relatively painless solution to reduce a “double chin”. Kybella will get rid of any double chin you have. A short series of injections of a naturally-occurring molecule called deoxycholic acid targets submental fullness – the very specific type of fat molecule that creates a double chin.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) AKA THE “VAMPIRE FACELIFT” FOR TRANSGENDER

PRP is not technically a ‘facelift’. It’s a relatively non-invasive procedure that works by harnessing your own biological nutrient-rich cells. This is done to stimulate the regeneration of the underlying structural integrity of your skin. This will stimulate the release of the skin’s own stem cells encouraging the skin to create new blood vessels, new collagen, and new skin cells.
